Orta
Orta town is the spiritual and historical
heart of Lake Orta, a small lake not far from
Lake Maggiore. Orta is a town with historical
character dominated by its municipal
building standing elegantly in the main
square (1582). Orta's cobbled streets, narrow
alleyways, courtyards and little shops take
you back in time. In the main square you will
find lots of open air café and ice
cream parlours to enjoy.
This is also where you will find the main
ferry terminus to catch ferries travelling
to different places also over to the small
island of San
Giulio
which lies opposite the town. This island
can be explored, it is also where a community
of Benedictine nuns live. The ancient Basilica
should also not be missed.
