Arona Arona is the first town at the southern end of the western shore. It is an ancient town which is still of considerable importance, being a railway junction of lines to alpine passes and to Milan, Turin and Genova. Above the town stands the statue of San Carlo constructed in 1697. It is possible to go inside the statue which can hold 6 people at a time. From the top looking out of San Carlo’s eyes there are magnificent views over the lake to the Castle of Angera which lies on the opposite bank. The town has many interesting churches and a lovely lakeside promenade. It has a historical center which is worth exploring. The main pedestrianized street which runs through the center is lined with lots of shops. Along the promenade there is a children play area, and summer evenings there are often musical events taking place. For a particularly special evening, a great place to try some of Italy’s best wines is in Piazza San Graziano, 30 at the Osteria degli Acrobati ... Have Fun !
